What BMI means
Body Mass Index is a quick way to see whether your weight sits in a healthy range for your height. It is worked out by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. The result places you in one of four broad bands.
- Below 18.5 — underweight
- 18.5 to 24.9 — healthy weight
- 25 to 29.9 — overweight
- 30 and above — obese
BMI is a general screening guide, not a diagnosis. It does not separate muscle from fat, so very muscular people may read high while still being healthy. Use it as a starting point and talk to a doctor about your own situation. You can read more in our full BMI guide.
